Multifamily Recycling

If you live in an apartment, condominium, or trailer court you should have the opportunity to recycle on the property. This is not simply a good idea, it is the law. The 1991 Oregon Recycling Act requires apartment complexes throughout the County to provide ". . . A separate location for containers or depots for at least four principal recyclable materials . . .". Many multifamily communities throughout Clackamas County have requested, and received, recycling services from their garbage and recycling company.

Recycling at your complex is a four way partnership, between you, your manager, your garbage and recycling company and your local government.

• Your Role
  Prepare materials according to directions and to recycle (at your complex) only those items that have collection containers at your recycling station.
• The Managers Role
  Provide you with instructions for material preparation and a clean recycling and trash area. The manager is also responsible for checking the containers to make sure materials are prepared correctly. The manager has two choices when material that is improperly prepared is in the recycling bin: 1) He/she can take the time to properly prepare the material; 2) He/she may throw it in the dumpster. If you do not hold up your end of the partnership the entire system may fail.
• The Garbage and Recycling Company's Role
  Collect your properly prepared recyclables weekly. They are also required to maintain the collection containers in good working order and keep containers well labeled.
• Clackamas County's Role
  Provide educational materials and assist the property management with implementation of the program.

If you don't have a recycling system now you can still begin recycling by preparing recyclables correctly. Please take advantage of the recycling drop-off depot nearest you.

Filling up your dumpster with recyclables is a waste of valuable resources. Please contact your manager to have them request multifamily recycling assistance from their garbage and recycling company. Be patient it may take 6-8 weeks before a system is in place.
