Nursing homes are regulated by the state to insure that they meet standards for quality care and services. There are two levels of nursing home care available: intermediate and skilled. Most nursing home residents do not require skilled nursing or skilled rehabiliation services. The long-term care and 24-hour supervision needs of most nursing home residents can be met in an intermediate care, rather than a skilled facility. Nursing homes have more staff and consultants than other supervised living arrangements. They may be able to care for persons with problems such as incontinance, wandering, advanced dementia, or lack of mobility, which require a level of care not available at many other facilites.
