The Sheriff's Office hosts an annual Citizens Informational Academy that provides opportunity for members of the community to receive education on the functions of the Sheriff's Office.
The goal of the academy is to foster positive relationships between the community and its Sheriff's Office. Graduates will gain an understanding of the operation of the Sheriff's Office and develop an awareness and appreciation of the various challenges and decisions faced daily, by the Sheriff's Office; as well become goodwill ambassadors. Even though citizens attending the academy are given information in numerous police-related subjects, the graduates are not prepared for nor expected to conduct any police services.
Attendees are selected and invited to attend the academy by the Sheriff. Requirements for admission to the academy are set to maintain the quality of the program for the citizens and members of the Sheriff's Office providing instruction during the academy. Basic requirements include:
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- A Resident of Clackamas County (preferred, but not required).
- Approved for attendance by the Sheriff or assigned designee
The academy will accept 20 attendees through an application process. A background check of the prospective attendee will be conducted. The investigation will include a criminal history check; a driver's license status and review and approval. Attendees will be required to sign liability waivers and will be encouraged to ride along with a member of the Sheriff's Office during the academy.
The Citizens Informational Academy consists of nine (9) evening classes (held one evening a week). Weeknight classes are held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (with one of the evening classes reserved for graduation). In addition, students also attend two full Saturdays of instruction and “hands-on” exercises. Academy classes begin the first week of April.
