Summer 2010 Swim Lessons
Students may be enrolled in one learn-to-swim class and one session at a time.
Before enrolling in the next class/session, the student must show certification (received on the last day of class).
Please read class descriptions prior to registering to ensure registration for the correct class. Additional registrations may be made based on availability after your current session. Please have proof of level.
You may register your immediate family only.
All classes must have a minimum of six enrollees to be offered. Classes with insufficient registration will either be canceled or combined.
North Clackamas Aquatic Park Swim Lessons run nine consecutive weekdays Mon-Fri and and Mon-Thur. All classes are offered each session. Session dates are as follows:
- Session 1: June 21-July 1
- Session 2: July 5-15
- Session 3: July 19-29
- Session 4: August 2-12
- Session 5: August 16-26

PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM- Ages 3 to 5
WATER BABIES - 8 to 18 months old
Designed for babies accompanied by a parent in the water with the parent being an integral part of the learning process. A positive approach to water adjustment, stressing enjoyment and development of skills
AQUA TOTS - 19 to 35 months old
Parents accompany their children in the water with emphasis on teaching both child and parent swimming progression and safety skills.
SEALS - 3 to 5 years old
A basic introduction to the water including bubble blowing, submerging the face, and gliding and floating on the front and back.
ADVANCED SEALS - 3 to 5 years old
Eligibility for Advanced Seals is based on instructor recommendation.
SUPER SEALS - 3 to 5 years old
Eligibility for Super Seals is based on instructor recommendation.
YOUTH PROGRAM – Ages 5 and older
LEVEL A
An introduction to the water and water safety. To advance to the next level participants must be able to enter the water independently, travel at least 5 yards, bob 3 times and exit the water. They must also be able to glide on their front 2 body lengths, roll to their back and float for 3 seconds and then return to a standing position (without support).
LEVEL B
This level build on basics through teaching breath holding, bobs in deeper water, front and back floats and glides, rolling from the front to back, how to change direction and increased endurance. To advance to the next level participants must be able to step from the side into chest deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll to the back and float for 5 seconds and then recover to a standing position. They must be able to move into a back float for 5 seconds, roll unto the front and then recover to a standing position. Lastly, they must also be able to push off and swim on the front for 5 body lengths , then roll to the back and float for 15 seconds, followed by returning to the front and swimming 5 more body lengths (without support).
LEVEL C
This level develops strokes through teaching rotary breathing while swimming front crawl and in streamline position with leg action. This level also introduces swimming in deep water, the elementary backstroke and the sidestroke and builds on front and back crawl. To advance to the next level participants must be able to jump into deep water from the side, swim front crawl for 15 yards, and maintain an upright position by treading or floating for 30 seconds and swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards.
LEVEL D
This level improves strokes through teaching head first entry, using different kicks while treading, open turns on the front and back, breaststroke and butterfly, as well as, continued work on the front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and sidestroke. To advance to the next level participants must be able to perform a feet first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. They must also be able to swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction and swim back crawl for 15 yards.
LEVEL E
This level refines strokes through teaching shallow diving from the side, surface dives, and flip turns on the front and back. Progress on the front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke will also be part of this level. To advance to the next level participants must be able to perform a shallow dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, change direction and swim back crawl for 25 yards.
LEVEL F
Fundamentals of Diving
Participants in this class will continue to work on their swimming, in addition to learning basic stretching, body alignment and control for diving from the side and diving board. Also, included in the level are approaches, takeoffs and the tuck and pike dives. To exit this level, participants must swim 500 yards continuously using 3 strokes of their choice, but at least 50 yards of each stroke. They must also perform a two-part takeoff with a feet first entry, as well as, head first entry from a 1-meter diving board.
Fitness Swimming
Class participants will continue using and improving strokes previously learned, while exploring the importance of circle swimming and using workout equipment such as, a pace clock, pull buoy, fins, and paddles. Basic principles for setting up an exercise program and calculating target heart rate will also be taught. To exit this level, participants must swim 500 yards continuously using 3 strokes of their choice, but at least 50 yards of each stroke. They must also be able to perform the Cooper 12-minute swim test and compare new results with the pre-assessment.
