On-Call Relief Worker - Juvenile Intake and Assesment Center

The Juvenile Department has an On-Call Relief Worker list to maintain 24-hour coverage at the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center (JIAC).  This entry level position assists in covering shifts at the JIAC on a 24-hour basis.  Duties will include but are not limited to:

•  Accepting custody of youth from police and the supervision of youth while in JIAC.
•  Photographing and fingerprinting youth.
• Gathering information from the youth, family, police and other agencies to determine appropriate levels of intervention.
• Independent assessment of specific, medical, mental health, or crisis needs of youth.
• Documentation occurs through data input and written reports.
• Formulating a plan for the youth addressing community safety concerns and the needs of the youth.
• Answering emergency/crisis phone calls from parents, youth, and other agencies.

Interested applicants should possess a combination of education in a related field (i.e. criminal justice, psychology, sociology, child and family studies) as well as experience working with at-risk youth.

On-Call Relief Workers should possess knowledge and skill to:

• Understand juvenile justice system and possess the ability to possess state laws
• Rules and regulations and department policies and procedures
• Maintain discipline and orderly conduct including handling unruly youth through the effective employment of physical restraint
• Work without direct supervision with but within departmental policies and procedures
•  Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Qualified applicants will have a bachelors degree or higher in criminal justice or a related field as well as at least 6 months experience working with at risk youth.  Applicants are required to pass a criminal history check, driving record check and drug test as well as demonstrate availability meeting the needs of the agency. After submitting an application, applicants will be contacted for an interview.  Appropriate candidates will receive 32-40 hours of training including supervised JIAC shift work.
