TriMet Board of Directors Meeting

TriMet Board of Directors Meeting in Clackamas County
Commissioner Lynn Peterson Welcoming Remarks
June 27, 2007

It is my pleasure to welcome the TriMet Board of Directors to Clackamas County. On behalf of the Clackamas County Commissioners, and all of the elected officials and community members in the county, we are delighted to have you visit us. As a former employee of TriMet, I’m especially proud to be serving as your host here today.

The building we are sitting in is walking distance from the region’s newest extension of our transit system— and the first extension of the light rail system into Clackamas County— the I-205 Light Rail. In less than a week, we will all be just around the corner at Clackamas Town Center celebrating the funding and construction of the I-205 Light Rail project with our partners from around the region. This is an exciting project for Clackamas County and we want to thank you for all of your hard work and support in getting this project from good idea to—almost—reality.

We are also excited to be working together with TriMet on the development of the Portland to Milwaukie Light Rail project, which has the potential to be another key transit connection for our community and an important southern segment to the overall system. This six and one-half mile alignment between Milwaukie and Portland will provide additional transportation options for our fast-growing communities and help relieve traffic congestion.

These transit investments come at a critical time as the County plans for future growth. We know that a large share of projected regional development of housing and jobs is expected to happen in Clackamas County, and we need to ensure a transportation system is in place that can move the people and goods within and through the county. We want to continue our collaboration with TriMet in designing and delivering great transit service, whether light rail, bus, or even streetcar, to provide our county citizens and businesses with safe and efficient transportation choices that meet their needs.

Clackamas County today is a great place to live, work, and play, and we are committed to maintaining our unique livability and sense of place as we accommodate growth. We are striving for transit oriented and sustainable development, economic vitality, and a sense of community that is grounded in this county’s rich history. Integrating transit into all of these community development activities is so important and we look forward to your continued support and partnership in creating and serving great communities.

The success of our regional land use and transportation system depends on our partnerships, and today we have a lot to show for our collaborative efforts. In the not too distant future, we will have even more to be proud of. We’re pleased you’re here in Clackamas County today to see our community up close, and we hope you’ll come visit us regularly in the future—since you will be able to take light rail or a bus to get here.
